Casting

Actors and actress are the players of the movies, the ones who get the fame and glory. Again like any sports team these are the people you see on screen; the ones who don't do anything but play but still get the credit for everything. You can have a superstar in your film and many will believe the movie to be good; just like if you were to have a star quarterback on your football team everyone believes they will be good. This is not always the truth though as many actors and actresses who are seen as the best sometimes make movies that are flat out horrible. Johnny Depp is seen as one of the great actors of our generation. He has won multiple awards, but that does not mean that having Johnny Depp in your movie will make your movie good or even make your film money i.e. The Man who Cried.

The casting of actors is more important than one superstar. It's like having a quarterback with no receivers, the team has potential to be good but just not enough to be great. Instead it is very important to find the right balance of actors and actresses to work together to get the most realistic feel for the movie. For instance the movie the Blair Witch Project would have never worked if someone like Tom Hanks were in the film, because the movie called for a group of unknown kids who went away on a camping trip for the weekend and got lost. In contrast movies like the The Godfather would have never worked if the cast was completely unknown. The Godfather called for incredible acting and a sense powerful men; so what better way to do this than to get actors who are all hall-of-famers.

Actors and Actresses can, however, be the reason a movie is as good as it is. Let's take, for example, Cast Away where Tom Hanks is stranded on an island after his cargo plane crashes into the ocean. Almost the entire movie Tom Hanks is having to survive on the island with no one to talk to but his volleyball, Wilson, that becomes his only friend to keep him sane. The movie is based on the abilities of Hanks to give a riveting performance of survival. Compare this near one man performance with the cast of the Ocean's trilogy where the intrigue of the movie is the all-stars that got on board to make the movie like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Julia Roberts and the list goes on.

So all in all a cast can help make a movie great, but success is not as dependent on the actors as one might think. The actors/actresses are mere pons reading from scripts and improvising sometimes to the best of their abilities. Their job is to make the situation seem realistic and relatable. They do however get credit for a films achievement which makes a superstar a more intriguing pick because they become the face of success.
